It’s not all that long since I made some scones according to a Delia recipe, so with some leftover buttermilk in the fridge I decided to have a go at Nigella’s buttermilk scone recipe from Kitchen. Unfortunately it needed more buttermilk than I had in the fridge so I ended up buying some more anyway! It also features Trex vegetable shortening – not something I’ve ever used before.
So the ingredient list is a little bit longer, but the overall method is pretty similar. The dough had a similar consistency too. But I found that the stated time in the oven wasn’t enough and the scones remained a little doughy in the middle so I cooked them for longer which resulted in a very golden appearance.
The resulting scones are nice, with a hint of the buttermilk flavour coming through. On the first day I was a bit indifferent with no particular favourite recipe, but by day two it was clear that Delia’s scones keep better than Nigellas, so in the scone department it looks like Delia is our winner.
